This first part though focuses on the stuff that aired between our Winter impressions and now, including the not one but four Netflix originals, the return of a 50 year old franchise, PreCure’s 15th series and… horse girls. Yep. Anime man, it has everything.

This part includes… A.I.C.O: Incarnation // B: The Beginning // Douluo Dalu // Gegege no Kitarou (2018) // Hugtto! PreCure // Lost Song // Mi Yu Xing Zhe // Spiritpact: Yomi no Chigiri // Sword Gai: The Animation // Uma Musume: Pretty Derby // Wangu Xian Qiong 2nd Season

Movie March – Deadpool

If only we could afford Hugh…

Welcome back to Movie March, where… what do you mean, it’s April? And Easter Sunday? AND April Fools Day? Guess we’d better do something appropriate for such an occassion then. And if we’re going to be full of contradictions on this article, might as well make it a live-action film. Which I guess means it’s time for Deadpool!

Coming out on Valentine’s Day back in 2016, the Marvel character famous for breaking the fourth wall and being more meta than even Batmite, managed to prove you can make a successful R-rated superhero movie (that’s 15 to us in the not-as-crazy-with-age-ratings UK), and create a flick unlike most others in the process. Plus with the sequel coming out next month, seems the right time to give this guy a chance.

Sean’s Top 10 Anime of 2017

2017 out of 10

These never get easier. The time has come to reflect on another year of great shows, lament about those I never got around to catching up with, and rank the ten best series and movies from the year that was 2017.

198! That was the number of first episodes you can read impressions of from across the four seasons. But only 21 passed the test this time around, maybe proving I really am getting tougher to please. Still, it ensured a high bar for most of those I kept up with, so without further ado, here’s the best of the best from 2017.

Movie March – Dear Basketball

National Basketball Animation

Welcome back to Movie March, where we’ll be looking at and reviewing animated films from both the east and the west all month long. For our fourth entry of 2018, I’ve decided to watch something completely different to what I usually cover and consider, in the animated short Dear Basketball.

Why? Because it won the Oscar for Best Animated Short this year, that’s why. And seeing as I now apparently watch Oscar award-winning films, this seemed a perfect choice. Plus I don’t have much time this week. So anyway, let’s see what the fuss is about.

Movie March – The Peanuts Movie

Good Ol’ Charlie Brown

Welcome back to Movie March, where we’ll be looking at and reviewing animated films from both the east and the west all month long. For our third entry of 2018, I’m indulging in the modern take on one of my childhood loves that I really need to get around to re-reading and watching, Peanuts!

A series I picked up a few books of at the Ross-on-Wye market back when all comics meant to me was the Beano and Dandy, I enjoyed the often sarcastic wit of everyone involved and Charlie Brown’s many, many failed attempts to kick that rugby ball. But… does that translate well to the movie format?

Movie March – Perfect Blue

Singing the Blues

Welcome back to Movie March, where we’ll be looking at and reviewing animated films from both the east and the west all month long. For our second entry of 2018, we’ll be focusing on something from way back in 1997, as we take a look at Perfect Blue.

One of Satoshi Kon’s earlier works, before he had become one of anime’s best known directors, this was the film that opened doors for him, winning several awards and becoming a cult classic. But does it still hold up today, especially against the rest of Kon’s library?

Movie March – Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You!

I Chu-Chu-Choose You

March has arrived, not that you’d know from the winter wonderland outside. But that also means it’s time for the return of Movie March! We ran this back in 2014 as well as last year, and if you’re new here, it means you can look forward to a bunch of animated movie reviews throughout the month!

And to start, we’re looking at the latest Pokémon film that celebrated 20 years of the anime by retelling the origin story and first adventures of Ash for a new generation who… well, probably weren’t born back in 1997. But is Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! a pure nostalgia fest or a creative update for decades old writing? Let’s have a look…

Winter Anime 2018 – Three Episodes Later…

So the first episode impressions are done for another season, but my work is far from over. You may recall back in the first part, I said I was gonna give six shows one more shot at winning me over, by watching their first three episodes. Afterall, sometimes a show needs an arc to establish itself (see Madoka). So I’ve selected five from the reserves and one lucky unlikely to join my four keepers in this post. Will any of them take this chance at redemption and run with it? And what of those I did champion, the Colors, the Cardcaptors, the Evergardens and the darlings? Let’s see how they’re all doing…
