Winter Anime 2018 First Episode Impressions – Part 2

Return of the Queen

After the first part of this season failed to bring any must-sees, how will this second selection fare? Well, considering it’s headlined by the return of Cardcaptors, I’m optimistic. That ain’t the only long gone show making a comeback either, as straight from the 00s we’ve got Basilisk! Man, between those and Devilman, this really is the season of old shows making comebacks…

This part includes… Basilisk: Ouka Ninpouchou // Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card-hen // Gakuen Babysitters // Gintama.: Shirogane no Tamashii-hen // IDOLiSH7 // Jian Wangchao // Karakai Jouzo no Takagi-san // Kokkoku // Micchiri Neko // Mitsuboshi Colors // Ryuuou no Oshigoto // Shinkansen Henkei Robo Shinkalion The Animation // Yowamushi Pedal: Glory Line // Zoku Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru

Winter Anime 2018 First Episode Impressions – Part 1

Happy New Year to you too

While I don’t do my Top Ten list until March, I can safely say 2017 is a hard year to top, with numerous great shows making for compelling viewing. How do you follow a year which had Made in Abyss, Rakugo and Land of the Lustrous, to name but a few?

Well this season’s gonna give it a damn good go, with the highly anticipated KyoAni show Violet Evergarden waiting in the wings. But in the meantime, we’ve got adaptations of renowned yuri manga Citrus, renowned horror manga Ito Junji Collection, and… whatever the hell Pop Team Epic is. So let’s anime!

This part includes… citrus // DEVILMAN crybaby // Grancrest Senki // Hataraku Onii-san! // Ito Junji: Collection // Pop Team Epic // Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san // Sanrio Danshi // Slow Start // Sora yori mo Tooi Basho // Toji no Miko // Yuru Camp

Fall Anime 2017 – Three Episodes Later…

We Are The Crystal Gems~

First episode impressions may be over for the year, but that means it’s time to get down to actually watching the shows that impressed me.

From the 52 new series (not a DC reference), five emerged. Some I expected to pass, such as Ancient Magus’ Bride and Children of the Whales, but there were also a few surprises in Just Because! and Girls’ Last Tour, which is racking up lots of praise from the community. And don’t forget Land of the Lustrous, the CG show that could. So how are they all holding up three episodes in?

Fall Anime 2017 First Episode Impressions – Part 4

Fishing for Keepers

It’s a bumper final crop of first episode impressions to round the year out, as I look at 17 more shows that have aired in the past week or so. Though I’m just happy I don’t have to worry about this again until next year…

This last part has it all, from returning shorts like We Love Rice and Fireball, to the return of noitaminA with Inuyashiki, to long-awaited sequels like Hoozuki’s Coolheadedness and Blood Blockade Battlefront, and especially to the sequel to my third fave show of 2016, March Comes In Like A Lion. So what are we waiting for?

Fall Anime 2017 First Episode Impressions – Part 3

Spooky Scary Skelemages

Part the Third of our Fall anime impressions is here, as the brutality of about a dozen shows being dropped on one day hits home. But the good news is that means we have some of the season’s most anticipated series to talk about.

Idols are back in style, with new Love Live and Idolmaster series. There’s the adaptations of two great VNs in Dies Irae and Code:Realize. Mature toku franchise Garo makes a return to animation. And standing tall amongst them all, the long-awaited anime adaptation of Mahoutsukai no Yome, aka The Ancient Magus’ Bride. What were my thoughts on all of them? Let’s see.

Fall Anime 2017 First Episode Impressions – Part 2

My, what a big gun you have!

Time for us to continue our journey into the Fall anime season, as I realise I’ve watched about two dozen new shows in under a week. And I’ve got about as many left to go in the week to come. Aaaaaaaaaaaah.

This time, we cover mostly shows that aired between the 4th and 6th, though a few others have snuck in too. There’s the return of Kino no Tabi after 14 years away, the obligatory MMO show in Net-juu no Susume, and the first ever all-female staff anime series in Urahara. Aaaand there’s also keepers! But was it any of those shows, or something else entirely? Hmmm.

Fall Anime 2017 First Episode Impressions – Part 1

Food Wars, Food Wars Never Changes

Is it that time once more? The days grow shorter, the shops start stocking Halloween and Christmas goodies, and the Fall season of anime has arrived. This is usually where the big hitters of the year make their entrance, and considering my TV AotY has always been an Autumn show, it’s a reputation well-earned.

This first batch covers shows that aired up to October 3rd. We’ve got a few noteworthy sequels, such as UQ Holder, set in the far future of Negima, and Osomatsu-san 2, sequel to 2015’s classic. Food Wars is back too, alongside another pair of Jump series in Black Clover and Gintama. As for what else, and what I thought of these shows? Well, time to click and dive into this new season…

Summer Anime 2017 – Three Episodes Later…

Abyss Boy

First episode impressions may be done and gone for the season, but that only means the real test begins now, as I get to see how the shows I championed unfold over the coming months.

Half a dozen summer series stepped up this time around. From gamblers to spies, princes to pashas, ballroom dancers to orphan explorers… this season has provided an interesting variety of shows, that’s for sure, so let’s check in on them all three episodes later.

Summer Anime 2017 First Episode Impressions – Part 4

Dev Lyfe

And just as quick as we started, here we are, at the end of the summer first episodes. Well, okay, that’s not strictly true, there’s a couple airing in the tailend of July and one or two in August but… I dunno, maybe I’ll get round to them another time.

Anyways, this part contains July 11th to 14th, which includes most of the season’s shorts, amongst others. There’s comedy, there’s history, and there’s Teekyuu, because of course there is. In better shows, we have the second season of New Game, and the SAO of the season in Smartphone yadda yadda. It’s the first show on the list, so just scroll down to see the title, I ain’t typing it out twice.

Summer Anime 2017 First Episode Impressions – Part 3

Don’t you have a pet eagle?

Our coverage of the summer anime season continues, with another eleven shows that aired from the 7th to the 10th. Who says we can’t be up to date here?

Spearheading this section we have Welcome to the Ballroom, a highly anticipated series about… ballroom dancing. Will it be the next Yuri on Ice? Elsewhere, we’ve got monster girls in Centaur’s Worries, orphans in Made in Abyss and Tenshi no 3P, and a bunch more. But are any of them keepers?
