Monthly Recommendations – February 2017

It’s time for a new monthly recommendations column! Each month, we’ll be asking someone to pick out one of their favourite anime, comic, cartoon, manga or webcomic (or all of those!) and tell the world why they should be checking them out! This month, it’s RetroRemastered and Rock Bottom Radio’s own Laura calling the shots, so over to her!

I didn’t realise how many good cartoons I watched until I started this list. So, I picked the show that I feels needs more viewers and praise than it gets. As for my webcomic, I feel I only had one option. So without further ado…

Cartoon – Star Wars Rebels

Lucasfilm Animation’s Star Wars Rebels is a must-watch. Their last attempt, Clone Wars, was not for everyone, with its painfully slow start. It did eventually reach must-watch status, but it was too late for a large chunk of its audience.

Star Wars Rebels is set between Star Wars Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope. The show features the adventures of a band of misfit rebels, as they attempt to disrupt the Empire’s plans. Each member of the crew has their own endearing features; Kanan, Ezra, Hera, Sabine, Zeb, and even Chopper could easily become someone’s favourite Star Wars character, not just Rebels character. The characters are well written to the degree that they do have an emotional complexity and moral grey area which makes for interesting story arcs. It’s not just a case of these are the good guys and everything they do is the right thing. With these characters not being from the movies, it’s safe to say even if you’ve never seen Star Wars, you could easily watch this and enjoy it on its own.

That being said, if you are a Star Wars fan, this show gives you the Darth Maul that you don’t only want, but the one you deserve.

Star Wars Rebels is currently in Season 3, having first aired in 2014. You can watch it on the Disney XD channel, or stream it on the Disney Life app.

Webcomic – Botched Spot

Basically, Botched Spot is THE webcomic for wrestling fans. Let’s be honest, the world of wrestling can be wonderful at times, but it is also filled with weird moments and storylines, which from the outside world looking in will confuse you.

Botched Spot parodies and to a degree highlights the weird world of wrestling in the most hilarious ways. It’s like a inside joke, but on a massive scale.

There’s not much more to say other than if you’re a wrestling fan, then this is a must read webcomic for you! If you’re not a wrestling fan… maybe reading it might confuse you about wrestling even more.

You can read it here.
